On our way to Montepulciano we stopped at a
natural hot water spa (98.60 F) by the town of
Saturnia. The legend regarding the birth of
Saturnia tells that the god of fertility and
agriculture Saturn, got angry with the people who
were always at war with each other, sent a
thunderbolt to earth, giving life to a magic spring
of warm sulphurous water which would pacify
man.

Hot water that has several healing effects comes
out from the earth in a form of a waterfall that
spills into several natural pools carved into the
rock. We grabbed a blanket and our picnic basket
with the local salami, bread, cheese and wine,
and had a romantic lunch by the waterfall and
later climbed into one of the pools, where we
enjoyed a fabulous massage by natures constant,
gentle stream of clean warm water and digested
our meal in a place very close to heaven.
